DER STANDARD, the first German-language daily newspaper to go digital on February 2, 1995, has maintained its leading role in the Austrian media landscape. Partnered with COMYAN from the beginning, DER STANDARD has effectively utilized COMYAN’s Digital Asset Management System (DAM) to handle news reports, images, and more, seamlessly integrating digital and print operations.
Centralized Editorial Workflow
With the introduction of the third online CMS, Livingdocs, DER STANDARD has aligned its workflow to be “online only”. Content is transferred to the print production system, where an editorial team decides on the print layout using Protecmedia’s AI-supported AIDA DXP system.
Solution: Expanding the Content Backbone
Using COMYAN’s “content backbone” approach, the shift to digital-first was made easier. In a few months, COMYAN developed interfaces connecting systems, enabling automatic image processing and linking all editorial systems. Articles and images are transferred to the backbone from the “Proofread finished” status, allowing layout editors to seamlessly integrate content into page designs.
Achieving Unified Content Management
The goal of unifying all content in a single database has been realized, allowing seamless tracking of stories from urgent news to detailed print articles. This unified search capability across all media types and time periods represents a significant advancement over previous heterogeneous system landscapes.
Positive Impact on the Newsroom
Initial reactions have been highly positive. Project manager Mario Naito explains that the focus on online production has streamlined processes and enhanced the ability to serve readers’ needs. The integration has maintained print quality while improving digital output, creating a more efficient overall process and freeing online channels from print dependencies. The result is a flexible system that allows for better content reuse and improved product quality across both digital and print mediums.
